Our beloved pets are perennial favourites when it comes to subject-matter for our creative work.
And reproducing a likeness of our furry, feathered, ( or any other type of ‘coat’) friends in photo-realistic style using free machine thread painting is a little ‘project’ I’m working on at the moment.
This gorgeous little Beagle pup – fast asleep – shows how a ‘realistic’ likeness can be captured using machine thread painting.
Now, this piece, I have to admit, was rather fiddly, as it’s quite tiny, measuring just 4.5″ wide!
Sixteen shades of thread were used to create it. I had hoped to get away with using less, given the size of the piece, but in the end I simply couldn’t settle for a shade that wasn’t ‘just right’.
What I never ceased to be amazed by is the range of colours that are used in a thread painting like this. At first glance, the puppy appears to be basically brown and white. And yet, blues and green and greys are also included.
Sadly, this delightful pup (the ‘live’ version) is not mine – but I would happily take him on!
The piece is worked using free motion zigzag stitch.
