When the urge for ‘difference’ takes a grip!
Recent weeks have found me chipping away at making quite a number of photo-realistic thread painted pictures but every now and then I just throw up my hands and exclaim to myself that I just have to do something different for at least an hour or so!
It was during one of my filming sessions that I was struck by this urgent ‘need’, so the filming was set aside and I delved happily into my fabric stash to ‘find’ an idea.
You know, those ideas that lurk in the cupboard, just waiting to be released! (haha).
With no clear vision of what I was going to create, I sifted through the piles until something stood out, and ‘Corrosion 1’ is the result.
Curiously, the piece started out with the thought that I’d recreate the look of peeling paint on a wall, but somewhere along the line it transformed from peeling paint to corroding metal.
The piece is layered with a number of different fabrics, cut and shaped and reassembled, and, of course, heavily stitched.
Going from ‘photo-realistic’ to ‘abstract’, just for a couple of hours, refreshed my brain and left me ready to go back to my filming.
So I think these occasional ABSTRACT OUTBURSTS will be making more appearances in my work.
The concept of ‘corrosion’ appeals to me, and already I can see the ideas jumbling around in my mind about what the next piece may be like.
So embrace abstract concepts in your thread painting when you feel the need to enrich and refresh your creative mind.

Love getting your short clips and videos. I sometimes make a “look alike” (really…), just to motivate and inspire me. Thanks for sharing

Nice creation of depth. I like this layering of fabric and use of color. I’m going to have to try it. Thank you.

Hi Deborah, yes there are many ways to interpret ideas!

I love the colours in the abstract piece. What stiches did you use they are so effective.? Love the book I have it on Kindle. The article on puckering has been so helpful. Not too cold here south of England 12C.
Alison.

Hi Alison – the piece is (mostly) free motion stitched. Changed things up a bit in this one! Good to hear you’re not getting too chilly!

Hi Deb, love this piece, I wonder have you seen/ read /heard about the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi? It is an aesthetic I find very appealing and hope to develop with my thread stitching designs. The beauty of things imperfect and incomplete.
KEEP UP YOUR INSPIRING WORK
many thanks Tina
